About S&A Education

Education Beyond Memorisation

S&A Education was founded with a simple belief: students should learn how to think, not simply what to remember.

Aditha Karunaratne

Co-Founder

Aditha Karunaratne is a co-founder and director of S&A Education, with responsibility for several of the academy's operational, technological and strategic functions.

He holds a BSc (Hons) in Civil Engineering and a Diploma in Engineering. He achieved 2 A*s and 1 B at Cambridge International A Level and has professional experience as a steel structural engineer. He has also provided technical instruction in engineering software and applications, including MATLAB, SpaceGASS, GeoStudio/GeoSlope, AutoCAD and Tekla Structures.

His teaching and academic experience began during his own A-Level studies and continued through university, where he trained fellow students in technical applications and worked on academic research across several disciplines. These experiences shaped his approach to education, with an emphasis on helping students understand concepts, question what they learn and connect academic knowledge to the real world.

At S&A Education, Aditha oversees technology and web development, payment systems, HR administration, marketing, market research, business development and the academy's broader strategic direction.

Our Approach to Learning

Why S&A Education exists

We recognised a gap in the way students are often prepared for examinations. While a strong understanding of the syllabus is essential, students also need to know how to apply their knowledge, approach unfamiliar problems, communicate their understanding effectively, and develop the confidence to question what they learn.

At S&A Education, we aim to develop these skills alongside strong academic and examination preparation.

Our approach combines structured teaching with extensive application through past papers, topic-based worksheets and examination-style questions. Rather than simply providing students with answers, we give them the opportunity to think through problems, attempt questions independently and explain their reasoning. This allows us to understand how each student approaches a problem and provide guidance that helps them develop stronger problem-solving and independent learning skills.

We also believe that students should feel comfortable asking questions, challenging ideas and seeking clarification when something does not make sense. Curiosity, discussion and thoughtful questioning are important parts of the learning environment we aim to create.

Our Approach

Understand. Apply. Perform.

01

Understand

Build a strong understanding of the subject and the principles behind it, rather than relying solely on memorisation.

02

Apply

Use that knowledge to solve structured problems, topic-based questions and examination-style questions.

03

Perform

Develop the examination technique required to communicate knowledge effectively and understand how marks are awarded.

Our aim is not simply to help students know an answer. It is to help them understand why an answer is correct and how to arrive at it independently.

Beyond the Examination

We want students to leave with more than an examination result.

Confidence
Strong understanding
Independent study skills
Critical thinking
Problem-solving ability
Examination technique
Confidence to ask questions

These skills become increasingly important as students progress into higher education and beyond.

Our Philosophy

Don't just give the answer. Teach students how to find it.

Why We Built S&A

An academy built around curiosity, not intimidation

We wanted to create an academy where students are curious rather than intimidated by education — an environment where students can ask questions, challenge ideas, make connections and apply what they learn beyond the textbook.

We believe a good teacher should be someone a student can challenge. Students should feel comfortable questioning an explanation, exploring an alternative approach and saying when something does not make sense.

This philosophy is at the heart of S&A Education.

Our Vision

A leading global provider of examination preparation

Our long-term vision is to build S&A Education into a leading global online provider of Edexcel and Cambridge examination preparation, with a particular focus on examination technique and the application of knowledge.

We aim to expand beyond Sri Lanka and serve students across South and Southeast Asia, while building S&A Education into a dedicated centre for high-quality examination preparation.

The examination matters.

But the ability to learn, think and solve problems lasts much longer.
